Motornomativity: How Social Norms Hide a Major Public Health Hazard

The authors used a survey with two sets of questions about normative statements that are centered around either cars or something else. They found much higher normalization of car-related statements (e.g., “risk is a natural part of driving and we should accept it” vs. “risk is a natural part of work and we should accept it”). Non-drivers had similar bias.
Some of the questions may not be entirely fair, but it is still interesting results and it’ll be interesting to see more expansive surveys involving other normative judgements. It will be also fascinating to run the same survey across countries and cultures.
