A nationwide study of “third places” (casual social gathering spaces) using Facebook pages data. We find significant geographic variation in third place distribution that correlates with demographics and county characteristics. Social networks of restaurants and indoor recreation pages tend to be tight-knit communities of pre-existing friendships, whereas places of worship and community amenities are more likely to bridge new friendship ties.
