We examine how nations finance scientific research by analyzing funding acknowledgments in scholarly publications. The analysis reveals a competitive dynamic between China and the United States in global science funding, with China increasing publications with both domestic and international support while the U.S. maintains its position as the most significant international research partner. Lower-income nations depend heavily on external funding sources and face risks from disruptions in global funding flows.
